Volunteer project: "Neighbors In Action" - Saturday, March 3
Date: 1/31/2012

Our next outreach event is the "Neighbors In Action" cleanup project, scheduled for Saturday, March 3, 10am-12pm. We will be working at 2300 N. College Ave Philadelphia, PA 19121. Fairmount Water Works' "Schuylkill Soundings" featuring EWB-MAP

EWB-MAP will be the featured presenter at the monthly "Schuylkill Soundings" lecture series hosted by the Fairmount Water Works interpretive Center on Wednesday, December 21, 5:30-7:30pm. We will present on all three of our international projects, in addition to discussing the general vision and mission of the chapter going forward. Admission to the event is free; some wine and cheese will served from 5:30-6pm before the presentation. Please RSVP with the FWWIC at 215-685-0723.




Next Chapter Meeting - January 5, 2012
Date: 12/8/2011

Thanks to all who attended the December happy hour meeting at City Tap House. We're planning for another happy hour type meeting in February or March. The next Chapter Meeting will be Thursday January 5, back on the Drexel campus. Among other items, we will discuss openings in the positions for Vice President of Finances (Fundraising chair) and Public Relations Lead. If interested in either position, feel free to contact the chapter ahead of time.

Project Updates
Date: 12/2/2011

El Salvador: Our El Salvador project team returned from an eight-day site assessment trip in the community of Las Delicias on November 20! Team member Adam Brostow provided updates of their daily work on the project wikipage, which you can view at:

Philippines: The Philippines project team was awarded $17,000 from The Boeing Company via EWB-USA's Fall Grant cycle! The team has begun preparations for a three-phase well drilling implementation trip beginning in January and end in early March.

Rwanda: The Rwanda project team is on a site monitoring trip of the water and sanitation design and facilities in the Twa Village November 27-December 10 to determine where future work is needed.



Thanks to all who attended and contributed to making EWB-MAP's 2nd Annual Fall Fundraiser on September 29 a success!  We raised a net amount of nearly $6,000, all of which will go towards our continuing water and sanitation projects!

A special thanks to Fairmount Water Works for graciously hosting the event, and our sponsors who helped cover the food, beverage, and overhead costs for our event!

Columbia University to host Northeast Region Workshop

Columbia University Student Chapter and the Northeast Region are very excited to be hosting the Northeast Region Workshop, November 18th-20th of 2011 at Columbia University in New York, NY.

The workshop will provide a great learning experience for all types of EWB-USA work, and will also emphasize networking and collaboration between chapters. The breakout sessions will provide information on critical knowledge and experiences through speakers and panel discussions, and the technical sessions will offer hands on experience with real-life scenarios encompassed in EWB-USA work. All together, the workshop will attempt to improve upon the processes and functions of individual chapters, and the EWB-USA organization as a whole.

In addition to our hands-on workshop sessions and an opening address by Cathy Leslie, Executive Director of EWB-USA, our general sessions will include highly accomplished professionals in broad-ranging topics specifically focused on holistic project sustainability. Chapter Presentations: Project presentations are a great way to share EWB project successes and lessons learned with other members, develop presentation skills, and familiarize new members with what we do. If your group is interested in presenting at the workshop, please apply here or contact Julie Gagen (pastpresident@ewb-northeast.org) with questions, topic requests, or for further information. Deadline to submit a presentation is October 17, 2011.

Poster Competition: Have a really successful project your chapter would like to showcase? The Workshop Committee is inviting chapters in the Region to submit project posters that showcase their best projects. Monetary prizes will be awarded to the top three posters. Submission requirements will be available here https://sites.google.com/a/ewb-northeast.org/northeast-region/Home/2011-north-east-region-workshop/poster-competition on October 15, 2011.

Scholarships: Scholarships are now available to members of the EWB-USA Northeast Region. The purpose of these scholarships is to provide a portion of registration and travel related fees for student and professional members wishing to attend the Workshop. Toys for Tots Holiday Happy Hour

EWB-MAP's Toys for Tots Holiday Happy Hour was held on December 16, 2010. We met at City Taphouse, and toys were donated to the Camden, NJ branch. Thanks to all who contributed.

Philadelphia Cares Day!
Saturday, October 16, 2010 - 9am to 12pm

EWB-MAP is forming a volunteer team for Philadelphia Cares Day 2010!

In one day, we can make a world of difference. October 16th is Philadelphia Cares Day! Education is the foundation of a great city and Philadelphia Cares Day offers an opportunity to lay the groundwork. Join EWB-MAP for the city’s 17th annual day of service which directly benefits the city's public schools by bringing together over 8,000 volunteers that contribute 70,000 service hours in to over 100 schools in one day! It will be the third year in a row in which our chapter will be involved. Volunteers create libraries, paint classrooms, design murals, plant greenery and so much more. Join us as we show Philadelphia students that we do care. Celebrate your commitment to public education by joining our team today!

Recap of June 26 “Neighbors in Action Project”

He has also had the opportunity to visit the community of Las Delicias, where one of our proposed water projects is located. LOVE Your Park Day on May 8, 2010!

It’s that time of year again! GPC’s “LOVE Your Park” event – formerly known as Philadelphia Cares about Fairmount Park Day – will be taking place throughout the city from 9am to 12 noon on Saturday, May 8th. EWB-MAP has began to gather a team of friends, family, and colleagues to make the parks beautiful!

Last spring, thousands of enthusiastic volunteers throughout the city painted, weeded, and planted flowers at their local parks. You can be a part of this citywide beautification too! Sign up with the EWB-MAP team by emailing Walt Walker.

This day is in partnership with Greater Philadelphia Cares, Fairmount Park, The Philadelphia Department of Recreation, and Philadelphia Green of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

EWB-MAP to be the Featured Presenter at the PSPE Dinner Meeting

EWB-MAP will be the featured presenter at the dinner meeting of Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers (PSPE) on Thursday, January 21. This novel curriculum, developed by The Fairmount Waterworks Interpretive Center, MAGPI, and the Philadelphia Global Water Initiative will focus on a clean water and sanitation project in Rwanda. “Global Water Action: A Focus On Rwanda” Event at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center a Success!
October 31, 2009

Bob DiFilippo from EWB-MAP, Lily Yeh from Barefoot Artists, and Cameron Bass from Jefferson Health talked about the differences volunteers have made in a survivors’ village in Rwanda. They spoke at the opening reception for an exhibition of photographs at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center on September 24. A silent auction held during the reception raised $2500 to continue their work. Read more...
