Introduction

EWB-MAP has partnered with Barefoot Artists, Inc. and Thomas Jefferson University to help the Rwanda Health and Healing Project in an effort to provide the patients from the Rugerero District with proper sanitation while receiving care from the nurses at the clinic. The patients are currently using the nurses’ restroom, which is not sufficient for the number of patients and the nurses. The existing facilities include only two toilets, which are flush toilets without ready access to water. The toilets, originally part of a small water system, no longer function unless the tanks are manually filled.

The remnants of the existing Clinic latrine, which was built to serve the Clinic patients, collapsed six years ago during an earthquake. The latrine walls were loosely laid with little or no mortar and no footings. The new building incorporates good structural design and will be constructed under the supervision of a Project Manager who is affiliated with the Local Rwandan Red Cross. He has helped our team with the repair and construction of all of the new and rebuilt latrines in the Rugerero Village.

The Clinic Staff had no recourse for the repair of the latrine building, and through our Red Cross collaboration, asked them if we would consider this project. It was a natural fit with our Rugerero Survivor Village Project because we had established a local team that was and is undertaking latrine repairs and replacement.

This project will also provide a water and/or sanitation solution for the Twa village. The details of the community and the project itself will be developed after the assessment trip. This community is a tightly knit community so community wide solutions may be a possibility. The goal of the project is to improve health in the village.

By completing these projects, EWB-MAP will be able to improve the sanitation conditions and access to clean water for drinking, bathing, cleaning and cooking for over 100 families.
